Chemistry Goes Green xD

Just a funny fact, the hard ass 11th grade chemistry has a chapter about water and the environmental problems concerning water, I was stunned but happy, because it shows that our nation is becoming more aware about this BIG issue of the lack of water worldwide!!

Some things that i learned in the chemistry class:

97% of the water is salty, and just 1% is drinkable;
You can live 28 days without eating, but just 3 without drinking;
In some countries people are obligated to have containers to use the rain water to hose they're gardens

SAVE WATER!!!! We'll need it...

I became surprised when I heard that a green movement will happen in Portugal, but I also realized that we're becoming a green country, and that's AWESOME!!

This project is named "Limpar Portugal" (Clean Portugal), and it will happen on the 20th of March, for more information go to www.limparportugal.org.

So now for Portuguese readers: Marquem na agenda, 20 de Março, vamos limpar o verde do nosso pais!

I've been absent from posting, and you might find weird that my "come-back" post it's not about an environmental issue,but I had to post something about this tragedy that occured a litte more than a week ago, it has been all over the news you all know what I'm talking about...

So, Christmas is coming, another year of awesome gifts, awesome food, awesome Christmas tree and so many more awesome things, however Christmas is as well one of the most "Non-Eco-Friendly" Holiday, remember that from all those gifts there are tons of wrapping paper, from all that food there's a huge waste, to have the tree in our living rooms millions of them were chopped-down etc.

But this Christmas will be different, this Christmas with some tips, we'll all try to have an Eco-Christmas, so here they are:

Recycle your wrapping paper. Do you know that if every family reused just 0.6 meter of holiday ribbon, the 61,000 kilometers of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet?

Recycle your tree, instead of ending on a landfill trees can be ground into wood chips, which can be used to mulch gardens or parks or to prevent erosion at a local watershed;

Low-Energy Lights, use the 21st century revolutionary Eco-friendly LED, they're a few Euros more expensive, but they last much longer, use 90% less energy and stay cool to touch.

Buy Nothing Day

The Buy Nothing Day (BND) was born 10 years ago in USA, in form of a protest against consumerism.
I heard about this yesterday, when I tuned in The News, and I saw some crazy guys playing in Downtown - Chiado, hugely known by it's stores and commerce, with some really weird instruments made of barrels, and supermarket boxes, with some signs saying things like: "Save resources, Buy only what you need", "Don't buy Today" etc. I thought that was really weird 'cause we're almost on Christmas, so i digged out and I discovered that those guys are from an environmental organization called GAIA, and they made a lot of buzz on the media and everybody around stopped at least a minute to think about that i'm sure,
So if we think on the environmental side of this issue, not the economical , we'll realize that our society buy so much that just in resources for packages, bags, etc. We spend really a lot of it. So I dare you to at least once a year, and it doesn't need to be on the BND, to choose one day and not to buy anything!

Are We Going to Became The Incredible Hulk?

Of course we won't become The Incredible Hulk, but the real question is if GM foods are going to genetically change us.
First of all, What's GM food?

GM food is the food which is genetically modified, that means that the DNA of the food is altered in order to grow faster, more appealing and so that it can grow where it normally couldn't.

Well, to answer the first question I've made a search on the net, I discovered that the information is scarce, and the few that exists is mainly negative towards the GM foods, so many of the opinions don't suggest that we'll become The Incredible Hulk, but they clearly suggest the emergence of diseases, tumors, cancers etc.
So if you ask me if I would consume that kind of food, I'll definitely answer no, because I don't have enough information about it, but people are free to choose, so I think that producers shouldn't be forbidden to produce, but the products should be labeled and measures should be taken in order to protect the natural crops, so that they can't be infected.

Overpopulation and The Environment

Today in the English Class, we started to talk about Overpopulation and it's consequences, being this a kind of Green Blog, we decided to post some consequences related to overpopulation and the environment:

Prices of fish are high because 90% of the big fish are gone.
The earth is polluted with plastics, in part because of shortage of natural materials.
Rivers and bays are polluted because of high level of population and industrialization.
Wild animals are disappearing because of over-hunting and environmental destruction.
Natural flora is being wiped out to make place for cash crops to feed the hungry humans.
Cost of living is very high because of short supply of food, energy, and shelter.
Noise pollution and light pollution are so high that they disrupt normal biorhythm.
Even the most pristine parts of the world have man-polluted air, soil, and water.
Automobile traffic is slow and causes air pollution because of too many cars and people.
Countries go to war for natural resources because of too many people.

Yesterday, I was thinking and I realised that the first and the basic thing that people have to do to help save the planet is just reduce their consumption!

It's very simple, everyone can do it, and besides helping the planet it also helps the bills to be lower!
And there are so many things that people could do.. these are three of them.

--In some cases, in some families, each person has his own tv even if the're watching the same channel. If they watch tv all together, it would be better not only for family life but also for the planet, by reducing the electrical consumption.

--Another one is the well known case of water waste in the shower. It happens that people know that they could save some water by taking faster showers, but they still have long ones.

-- And at last but not least, people could buy bigger products and so they wouldn't have to buy things so many times, reducing their waste.

Now I challenge you to comment this post and tell us some more ways of help save the planet by reducing our daily waste ;)

Upcycle: A Relatevely New Environmental Concept

We all know what Recyle is, but what about Upcycle, what's that? :S

Upcycle, is basically the concept of Reuse ,from the 3 R's pollicy, but from a more creative and "extreme" point of view. What I mean is, when you think of reusing, you think on using the same bags when you go shopping, refill the plastic bottles etc. However, Upcycle is more than that is ,for example, transform a pack of chips into a bag, a cookie wrapper into a pencil case, or even into a kite for kids to play, and all this at really cheap prices, like 0,99$. That's pretty amazing don't you think?

There's a company called TerraCycle which was the pioneer of selling these products on a bigscale. Beside selling they have so many projects, like collect your alleged garbage and pay you for it, incentivate you to give ideas for products etc. Basically they want to involve you in this movement of Upcycling

A Shocking Look Inside Chinese Fur Farms...

That was the subject on an e-mail I received just 10 minutes ago!

I opened it thinking that it was another message that we have to sign and send to a certain number of people, but I was so wrong, this e-mail really shocked me, the brutality and the inhumanity of the video atached to it it's unbelievable, it makes me wonder if we really are on the 21st century.
So I posted down the video, so you can see for yourself, I warn you this is explicit content, so for the ones who can't handle it I leave you a description:

When undercover investigators made their way onto Chinese fur farms, they videotape secretly those farms, and they found that many animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them. When workers on these farms begin to cut the skin and fur from an animal's leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who struggle too hard to allow a clean cut. And when they're skin is finally ripedd off they are thrown to the top of the previously skinned animals, most of them still breathing and strulling, and in this video you can even see one of them with strenght enought to lift up his head look , and even blink to the camera.

Today a stupid talk with a friend started with me having doubts if a Panda was a bear, he insisted that it was and I insisted that it wasn't, so he turned to me and said: "Ok, so when we arrive to the class we'll ask the teacher". And he really did, the Madam started to talk more about the Panda-Bear and specially about what concerns the subject of the class, that was environmental issues. So I leave you with this very funny cartoon, that represents one of the many environmental problem, and that is the endagered species.
